Your first day with Chronolipi

No training needed. If you can send a photo on WhatsApp, you can use Chronolipi. Here is everything you need, step by step, in plain words.

Getting started

Five steps, about ten minutes

The app shows these same words on its buttons, so you can follow along on the screen. Inside the app, the ? Help button at the top explains whichever screen you are on.

1. Create your account

Open app.chronolipi.com and choose Create a new account, then Just me or An office. Type the name — for example sharma-associates-cuttack (and, for an office, your own name) — then pick a password. A short sentence you will remember works best, like “my mango tree has nine branches”.

2 minutes

2. Print your emergency key

Chronolipi shows you an emergency key. Print it or write it down and keep it with your important papers. If the password is ever forgotten, this key is the only way back in — nobody, not even Chronolipi, can reset it for you.

1 minute

3. Add your first paper

Tap Take a photo (on a phone) or Upload files (on a computer). Photos, scans, PDFs, Word and Excel files all work. The page is straightened and read for you.

≈ 25 seconds a page

4. Check and save

Chronolipi fills in the title, the date on the paper and the kind of paper. Words it is unsure of are marked in yellow — compare them with the photo, fix anything wrong, and press Save.

Under a minute

5. Find it again

Type a name, a plot number, a case number or a few words you remember into the search box on the Home screen. Open the document to see it, download it or print it.

Good photos

Five tips for a clear photo

  • Lay the paper flat on a dark table, in daylight or under a bright tube light.
  • Hold the phone straight above the page so all four corners are in the picture.
  • Avoid your own shadow and the flash glare — tilt the page a little if it shines.
  • One page per photo. For a long deed, take a photo of each page, or scan it to a PDF first.
  • Old, torn or faded paper? Take the photo anyway. If the text comes out poorly, press Read again on our server on the check screen.
Questions

Everyday questions

The text came out wrong. What do I do?
On the check screen, the words in yellow are the ones Chronolipi is unsure of. Click into the text box and correct them, looking at the photo beside it. If most of the page is wrong — handwriting, faded or torn paper — press Read again on our server. It asks you first, because the server program will see that one page while it reads it, and the choice is written in your Activity list.
The date or the title is wrong — how do I fix it?
Just type over it before you press Save. Under each box Chronolipi shows why it guessed what it did — for example “found 12-08-2019 in the text” — so you can see at a glance whether it picked the right date. Already saved? Press Rename next to the document on the Home screen (or Edit details on the document's page) to change its title, date (and the exact day, if you know it) or type. The document itself is never changed. The Calendar on the Home screen shows what is on any date: pick a year, a month or a day.
I forgot my password. Can I still get in?
On the login screen choose Use emergency key, type your office name (and your own name, in an office) and the emergency key you printed when you signed up — it works on any device. Then set a new password in Settings. Without the password or the emergency key, your records cannot be opened by anyone — that is what keeps them private.
I lost the emergency key but can still log in. What now?
Log in, open Settings, and under Emergency key choose Show the key or Print. Print it again and put it somewhere safe.
Can I use it on a shared office computer?
Yes. Leave Remember me on this device unticked when you log in, and press Log out when you finish — closing the tab logs you out too. To remove everything Chronolipi kept on that computer, open Settings and choose Remove from this device.
What is two-step login, and should I turn it on?
After your password, you also type a 6-digit code from an app on your phone (Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, both free). Then someone who learns your password still cannot open your papers. Turn it on in Settings → Two-step login — it takes two minutes. An office owner can require it for everyone. If you lose your phone, log in with your emergency key, or ask your office owner to reset it.
Can I use Chronolipi like an app on my phone?
Yes. Open the app in Chrome on Android and choose Install Chronolipi on this phone on the Home screen (or Add to Home screen in Chrome's menu). On an iPhone, open it in Safari, tap Share and then Add to Home Screen. It then opens like any other app.
Can I take photos where there is no internet?
Yes, once you have logged in on that phone at least once. With no internet, open Chronolipi and choose Take photos now, add them later. Each photo is locked on the phone so that only you can open it — nothing is sent anywhere. When you are back online, log in: the Home screen shows Add them now, and each photo leaves the phone only after it is saved in your records. If the internet drops while you are saving, the photo is kept the same way instead of being lost.
Can I bring in my papers from DigiLocker?
Coming soon. You will choose From DigiLocker on Add documents, log in to DigiLocker, and tick the papers you want — marksheets, driving licence, vehicle RC and others issued to you. Each one will come straight to your screen without being kept on our server, and be read and locked like a photo.
Can I email a document in?
Coming soon. You will turn on a private Chronolipi address in Settings and forward a bill or statement to it. The moment it arrives it is locked so that only you can open it, and it waits on your Home screen until you add it.
Can I see the screens in Hindi or Odia?
Yes. Pick हिन्दी or ଓଡ଼ିଆ from the language box — on the log-in screen, in the top bar or in Settings. The screen changes at once and you stay logged in; the choice is kept on that device. Your own documents are never changed, and a court copy pack is always printed in English.
My papers are in Bengali, Tamil or another language. Will it read them?
Open Settings and, under Languages your papers are written in, tick the languages you need. Chronolipi reads 14: English, Hindi, Odia, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Assamese and Sanskrit. Tick only the ones you use — each extra one makes reading slower.
How do I get a document out — to print, email or show in court?
Open the document and press Download to get the original file exactly as you added it, or Print. The document page also shows “Unchanged since it was saved · …”, which is the proof an auditor or court usually asks for.
Who can see what I did?
The Activity screen lists everything that happened in your records — logins, documents saved, deleted or downloaded — newest first. Nothing in that list can be edited or removed, by you or by us.
Can the AI help me with a document — a summary, a letter, a question?
Yes. Open the document, press Ask AI and type what you need, in your own words and in English, Hindi or Odia: “summarise this and list who has to do what”, “write a polite letter to the owner about the pending dues”, “translate this into Odia”, “when is the next hearing?”. Then ask follow-up questions in the same box. Before the first question it asks your permission: the text goes, locked, to the AI program on our own server, which keeps nothing. Each answer is a draft — numbers that are not in your document are highlighted — so check it, then copy, print or save it as a new document. To ask about all your records at once, use the Ask AI box on the Home screen or the ✦ Ask AI button at the bottom of every screen — it finds the documents related to each question and says which ones it used. An office can switch AI help off in Settings.
Can my colleagues use it too?
Yes — choose An office when you create the account, or later in Settings choose Use with colleagues. On People, make an invitation link for each person and send it to them by WhatsApp or email. Everyone logs in with the office name, their own name and their own password, and gets a private My documents. Shared folders (Office, Accounts, Court cases…) decide who sees what. Roles: owner, administrator, member (adds and opens documents) and viewer (can only look).
Someone left the office. What happens to their papers?
On People, choose Remove. They cannot log in from that moment, and every shared folder they could open gets a new key. Documents in shared folders stay. Their My documents can be recovered by the owner if the office chose that when it was set up (people are told when they join); otherwise it stays closed for ever.
How much have we used this month?
Settings → Plan and usage shows pages added, Ask AI questions and pages read by AI this month, and how many people and shared folders your plan includes. Everything already saved stays readable on every plan.
A paper has several pages. Do I save each photo separately?
No. Take the first photo, then press Add a page on the check screen for each next page — or choose all the photos at once and press Save them as one document. They are saved together as one PDF, in page order, and each page is read.
Can Chronolipi remind me of a hearing date or a due payment?
Yes. When a document mentions a future date — “adjourned to 14.11.2026”, “payable by 30 November” — Chronolipi suggests a reminder right after you save it, or open the document and choose Add a reminder. Reminders show on Home under Coming up and in the calendar. In Settings → Reminders you can also get a short email, WhatsApp or SMS message; to keep your papers private it only says how many reminders you have, never what they are about.
How do I send one document to someone outside the office — a client, a bank?
Open the document and choose Share a link. Pick how long it works and how many times it can be opened, then send the link yourself. The person opens just that one document, without an account. You can stop the link at any time, and each opening is listed in Activity.
I need to produce a document in court. Can Chronolipi help?
Open the document and choose Court copy pack. It prints the copy with its SHA-256 fingerprint, the record of who saved, changed or shared it and when, and a draft of Part A of the certificate under section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (which replaced section 65B), filled in with what Chronolipi knows. It is a draft: complete and sign it with your advocate.
How do I keep a copy of everything?
On the Activity screen choose Download a backup of all my documents. Keep the file somewhere safe; you need your password to open what is inside.
